Suicide Prevention Awareness Month takes place every September to raise awareness of suicide, reduce the stigma around mental health and connect people with help. Organizations such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) use the month to share resources and promote the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which anyone in the United States can call or text at 988, 24 hours a day.
For employers, the month is a chance to talk openly about mental health, make sure every worker knows where to turn, and look at how job stress, long hours and injuries can affect the people on your team.
When Is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in 2027?
Suicide Prevention Awareness Month runs for all of September, from September 1 to September 30, 2027. The month is the same every year.
NAMI and other groups publish messaging and social media materials each year, and NAMI encourages people to use the hashtag #SuicidePreventionMonth and to include 988 information in every post. Some industries also hold their own events during September, such as Construction Suicide Prevention Week.
Why It Matters at Work
Most adults spend a large share of their waking hours at work, which puts supervisors and coworkers in a position to notice when someone is struggling. Work can also add to the strain. A NIOSH science bulletin notes that job strain and long work hours may be occupational risk factors for suicidal thoughts, and recommends giving workers more control over their work.
The numbers are significant. According to a CDC report on suicide rates by industry and occupation, 37,602 working-age people in the United States aged 16 to 64 died by suicide in 2021. The suicide rate for that age group was 17.8 per 100,000, an increase of about 33% since 2001. Rates varied widely by industry. Among men, the highest rates were in mining (72.0 per 100,000) and construction (56.0 per 100,000), compared with 32.0 for working men overall.
Suicide is not only a personal or family issue. It affects crews, morale and safety culture, and a workplace that treats mental health like any other part of environment, health and safety is better placed to help.
Fleets and remote crews deserve particular attention. Long-haul drivers, field technicians and workers on rotating shifts may spend long stretches alone or away from home, which makes it harder for anyone to notice a change. Make sure these workers have the same access to resources as people at a fixed site, and that supervisors check in with them regularly.
How to Take Part
- Share 988 everywhere. Post the 988 call and text number and 988lifeline.org on bulletin boards, in break rooms, in vehicles and on internal channels.
- Use NAMI's materials. NAMI publishes awareness graphics and messaging for September that you can share with your workforce.
- Promote your EAP. If you have an employee assistance program or mental health benefits, remind workers how to use them and that they are confidential.
- Train supervisors. Give leaders basic training in recognizing distress, starting a conversation and connecting someone to help.
- Look at work design. Review schedules, overtime, isolation and workload for factors that add avoidable stress.
- Plan for a crisis. Decide in advance how you would respond and support coworkers after a suicide or suicide attempt.
Toolbox Talk: It Is OK to Ask
Read this calmly and give people room to respond. Have 988 information on hand.
- Why we are talking about this. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Suicide affects people in every type of job, including ours, and talking about it openly can save a life.
- Notice changes. Watch for a coworker who seems withdrawn, unusually angry, hopeless, is drinking more, or talks about being a burden.
- Ask directly. If you are worried, ask privately and plainly whether they are thinking about suicide. Asking shows you care and opens the door to help.
- Listen and stay with them. You do not need to fix the problem. Listen without judging, and do not leave someone alone if you think they are in danger.
- Connect them to help. Call or text 988 together, contact our employee assistance program, or call 911 if there is immediate danger.
Close by reminding the group that seeking help is a sign of strength, and that we will treat conversations about mental health with respect and discretion.
Discussion question: What would make it easier for someone on this crew to say they are having a hard time?
How SMS360 Helps
The Training Management module in SMS360 helps you schedule and track mental health awareness and supervisor training alongside other required courses, so you can see who has completed it and who still needs it. You can store your crisis response plan, EAP information and 988 posters in a shared document library, deliver toolbox talks and record attendance from a mobile device, and use dashboards to follow participation across sites.
