Fleet Industry Veteran Joins Safety Management Systems, Inc.

Robert Petrancosta brings 44 years of transportation experience, regulatory knowledge

and industry leadership skills to Safety Management Systems, Inc.


Norwalk, CT- Safety Management Systems, Inc. is proud to welcome Robert Petrancosta as the company’s Vice President of Fleet Safety. Mr. Petrancosta will lead the company’s venture into the fleet market. He is responsible for a team focused on addressing the challenges faced by single drivers and small fleets by providing them with affordable access to the very same safety tools that corporate fleets use.

Mr. Petrancosta began his transportation career as a truck driver in Chicago, putting him in a unique position to address the needs of single drivers and small fleets. According to Mr. Petrancosta, the immediate challenge that many small trucking companies face is making the transition from manual paper based systems to a more reliable and organized electronic system. SMS360 gives an opportunity for these companies to swiftly make that transition at an affordable price.

Prior to joining SMS360, Mr. Petrancosta served as a Senior Safety Consultant for FedEx Ground. He also spent 25 years with Con-way Freight where he was responsible for the entire organization’s Safety and Compliance issues while working as their Vice President of Safety. He has spent many years as an active member of several American Trucking Associations Committees and been awarded the ATA Safety and Loss Prevention Management Council’s Leadership Award, as well as the ATA Safety Director of the Year Award.

Mr. Petrancosta has spent most of his career dedicated to safety technology initiatives which led him to author several industry safety articles including an Op-Ed article in USA Today on the physiological dangers of texting and driving. He also has testified on behalf of the industry before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee; Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration; Occupational Safety and Health Administration; and the Pipeline, Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. His vast knowledge of the fleet market and dedication to safety makes him an integral asset to SMS360’s leap into fleet. Mr. Petrancosta was appointed to and served three consecutive terms on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee.
